We’re riders ourselves and part of the New Zealand motorcycle community. Between us we’ve ridden everything from farm bikes and trail bikes to adventure bikes, road bikes and track bikes. Like many riders, we’ve spent years buying and selling second-hand motorcycles, riding gear and parts online, and we’ve experienced the same frustrations that many others have. Listings that are hard to find, old listings that are no longer available, fake profiles, scammers and marketplaces increasingly filled with new products shipped directly from overseas.
One experience that really stuck with us involved a friend. After scammers tricked him into revealing his address and confirming he wasn’t home, they stole his dirt bike shortly afterwards. Consequently, this ordeal reinforced just how important trust and transparency are when buying and selling online.
At MyMotoMarket, we’re committed to creating a safer marketplace for New Zealand riders. All users are required to complete identity verification before accessing marketplace features, helping reduce fake accounts and improve accountability.
However, no verification process is perfect. While we use industry-leading identity verification technology to help confirm users are genuine, MyMotoMarket cannot guarantee the identity, intentions, honesty, or actions of any user. Buyers and sellers must always use common sense and take appropriate precautions.
Remember: Identity verification only helps verify the person and it does not verify the item.
Inspect Before You Buy
Where possible, inspect items in person before making payment. Carefully review all photos and descriptions and ask questions if anything is unclear.
Verify the Item
For second-hand motorcycles, check registration details, ownership information, and vehicle history where appropriate. Consider arranging an independent mechanical inspection before purchasing.
Meet Safely
When meeting someone for the first time:
- Meet during daylight hours where practical.
- Consider meeting in a public location.
- Let someone know where you are going.
- Take another person with you if possible.
Use Secure Payment Methods
We recommend using traceable payment methods such as New Zealand bank transfers. Modern banking apps allow payments to be made instantly and provide transaction records for both parties.
Avoid sending money where you are uncomfortable with the level of information provided by the seller.
Be Cautious of Unusual Requests
Be wary of:
- Requests for urgent payment.
- Pressure to complete a transaction quickly.
- Requests to communicate outside normal channels immediately.
- Prices that seem too good to be true.
If something doesn’t feel right, walk away.
Second-hand motorcycles can have hidden mechanical, structural, legal, or financial issues that may not be visible in photographs.
Before purchasing a motorcycle, we recommend:
- Inspecting the motorcycle in person.
- Checking registration and Warrant of Fitness status.
- Verifying ownership.
- Obtaining an independent mechanical inspection where appropriate.
- Confirming any modifications comply with New Zealand requirements.
- Checking whether any finance or security interests may exist.
The final decision to purchase remains the buyer’s responsibility.
Test Rides
Test rides can involve significant risk for both buyers and sellers.
Before allowing or undertaking a test ride, both parties should satisfy themselves that:
- The rider holds an appropriate licence.
- The motorcycle is insured where applicable.
- Reasonable identification has been exchanged.
- Appropriate safety gear is worn.
MyMotoMarket does not participate in or supervise test rides and accepts no responsibility for arrangements made between users.
Protective riding gear plays an important role in rider safety.
While second-hand gear can offer value, buyers should carefully assess the condition and suitability of any item before purchase.
Helmets
MyMotoMarket does not recommend purchasing second-hand helmets.
Helmets may have suffered impacts, degradation, damage, or improper storage that is not visible externally. Buyers who choose to purchase second-hand helmets do so entirely at their own risk and should carefully assess whether the helmet remains fit for use.
Protect Your Personal Information
Only provide the information necessary to complete a transaction.
Arrange Safe Meetings
Meet in safe locations and avoid situations where you feel uncomfortable.
Be Honest and Accurate
Provide clear descriptions and photographs that accurately represent the item being sold.
Mark Listings Sold Promptly
Help keep the marketplace current by marking listings as sold once a transaction has been completed.
Not every sale needs a face-to-face meeting. For smaller items like gear, parts and accessories, New Zealand’s courier network makes it easy to sell to buyers anywhere in the country — not just your local region.
For Sellers
- Wait for cleared payment before you send anything. A traceable bank transfer that’s actually landed in your account is safest — avoid dispatching against a payment screenshot or promise.
- Always use a tracked courier service and keep the tracking number until the buyer confirms the item has arrived.
- Package items properly — a bit of extra padding costs little next to a damaged item and an unhappy buyer, take photos of the packaged item in case of courier damage in transit. Remember, most couriers require damage claims to be lodged within 7–10 days of delivery.
- Be cautious of buyers who want to use their own freight forwarder or an unfamiliar shipping arrangement — arrange delivery through a service you know and trust.
For Buyers
- Confirm tracking details before you pay in full, and check the item on arrival before you consider the sale complete.
- If something arrives damaged or not as described, take photos of the item and all packaging immediately, then contact the seller directly so they can lodge a damage claim with the courier.

Ownership of Goods
MyMotoMarket does not verify ownership of items listed on the platform.
Buyers should satisfy themselves that the seller has the legal right to sell the item and that ownership can be properly transferred.
Counterfeit or Replica Items
Buyers should carefully assess the authenticity of branded products, parts, accessories, and riding gear.
MyMotoMarket does not guarantee that any item listed is genuine, original, or free from intellectual property issues. Where authenticity is important, buyers should conduct their own checks before purchasing.
If you believe a listing is fraudulent, misleading, unsafe, stolen, counterfeit, or otherwise inappropriate, please report it to us immediately.
We may investigate reported listings and take action including warning, suspending, or removing users from the platform.

We are not a party to transactions between users and do not:
- Own, inspect, store, transport, or verify listed items.
- Verify ownership of listed goods.
- Guarantee the quality, condition, legality, authenticity, safety, or suitability of any item.
- Guarantee that buyers or sellers will complete transactions.
- Guarantee that information provided by users is accurate.
- Provide warranties on items sold through the platform.
- Act as an arbitrator or dispute resolution service for transactions between users.
All transactions, inspections, negotiations, payments, test rides, and purchase decisions are made solely between users.
